Who we are

Young South Sudanese, working for their country

In September 2021 a group of educated, like-minded young people working in different sectors came together to address South Sudan's most pressing needs. They called their organisation the Excellence Foundation for South Sudan.

EFSS is an independent, volunteer-based, non-profit national organisation. We provide education support, leadership development and community-building initiatives for individuals and marginalised communities, through grassroots activities that encourage literacy, community peace, tolerance and development.

We involve local people from the start of every activity, and we mobilise communities for peace, tolerance and development. Our work is not limited to one sector or one region.

  • Registered with the South Sudan Relief and Rehabilitation Commission (RRC) in September 2021, registration number 3,852.
  • Based on Ministries Street, Hai Buluk, Juba. In 2024 the RRC of Yei River County also granted us a Recognition Certificate of Operation.

What we work on

Seven areas, one aim: communities that solve their own problems

Our overall objective is to strengthen the ability of the communities we serve to tackle their own economic, social and environmental problems for sustainable development.

  1. Child protection and education

Confidence building, competitions, child-rights awareness, safe learning spaces, leadership in children's groups, and support for teachers and learners.

  2. Health, nutrition and WASH

Health awareness, public health events with government and partners, and community-managed water, sanitation and hygiene services.

  3. Women empowerment

Women's leadership, their constitutional, legal, social, economic and political rights, and income-generation skills.

  4. Media and information literacy

The skills to find, critically evaluate and ethically use information, oral, print and digital.

  5. Research and environmental conservation

Knowledge for better decisions, protecting natural resources, and action on climate change.

  6. Youth, peace and ICT

Information technology, peace and security services for young people.

  7. Livelihoods and rehabilitation

Basic farm inputs and tools, and organised farmer groups, for lasting economic change.
